TMS, or transcranial magnetic stimulation, is a type of brain stimulation using a magnetic field to create an electric current. It is safe, comfortable, and fast. TMS targets particular areas of the brain via electromagnetic induction—it is not electric shock therapy. Instead, an electric pulse stimulator is linked to a magnetic coil, which is then gently applied to the scalp. An electric current is then induced, which pinpoints specific brain regions. There are no systemic side effects to TMS therapy. We have found both in studies and in office that depression symptoms can be reduced by up to 85 percent and that up to 90 percent of patients find relief after just a few days of treatment.

Differences in Therapies

TMS therapy is the standard treatment plan, and is covered by most insurance plans. It typically requires one session per day for up to seven weeks. Although results can last for several months, many patients do find that they require additional sessions in the future—this is true of all types of TMS therapy. However, since we do serve patients nationwide, staying in the Scottsdale area for 6 – 7 weeks isn’t feasible for many patients.

Accelerated TMS therapy uses the same approach as TMS, but in a highly condensed format. These sessions can range from 5 – 10 per day and take 1 – 2 weeks to complete. The exact number of daily sessions will depend on different factors, but typically Accelerated TMS is a manageable approach for those coming in to the clinic from out of town. Additionally, Accelerated TMS offers an even higher rate of depression cessation than regular TMS therapy. However, it is not covered by insurance.

Finally, there is MeRT, a highly customized form of TMS therapy. It also takes the same approach as TMS and Accelerated TMS, but begins with brainwave mapping so a completely individualized treatment plan is created. This allows your provider to see exactly which areas of the brain should be targeted. However, similar to Accelerated TMS therapy, MeRT is not covered by insurance plans.

Depression and You

Oftentimes, depression is a chronic condition that will require lifelong management. Understandably, many people want to avoid or reduce medications and find a solution that is safe, effective, and fits into their lifestyle. All forms of TMS therapy fall into this definition, with patients as young as 12 years old being able to find 20+ months of relief following this therapy option (in most cases). Plus, for those who do use medication to help with their depression symptoms, TMS therapies can be used in conjunction with pharmaceuticals.

Depression can negatively affect every part of your life, but help is available. For many years, the only option was medication, but with TMS therapy you now have a choice in your treatment plan. All types of TMS therapy are pain-free and take just a few minutes (though of course Accelerated TMS can take longer considering there are multiple daily sessions). Of course, depression is often a co-morbidity of other issues such as anxiety and sleep disorders. TMS has been found to be effective in reducing symptoms of many concerns including insomnia, behavioral issues, and TBI. If you are concerned about the health and well-being of yourself or your child, consider TMS therapy as a possible right choice for your family.
